What is domestic abuse?

Anyone can experience domestic abuse. Women from any background can suffer abuse in a relationship.

DOMESTIC ABUSE IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE!


SOME FACTS


Domestic Abuse is rarely a one-off event

Over time it tends to become worse, it usually becomes more severe and happens more often and can often start during pregnancy.

Domestic Abuse takes on different forms. It can include: slapping, punching, shoving, kicking, knife wounds, rape, forces sexual acts, threats to kill or harm, bullying, being locked in or isolated. Persistent critisism, humiliation, withholding money.

Domestic Abuse is chronic abuse of power, it is calculated and controlled.

One woman is killed every 3 days by a partner or ex-partner.

The woman is most vunerable when she is leaving her partner.

On average it takes 37 incidents of abuse before the woman will leave.

Average stay in an abusive relationship is 7 to 10 years.

Domestic Abuse is not an occasional argument.

Women being harrased or stalked in 45% of cases did not call the police at all and 55% of stalking lasted more than a year.

45% of womem were stalked on the internet.
