About us
Warrington Women's Aid is a dedicated local charity, established in 1978, committed to empowering survivors of domestic abuse and breaking the cycle of violence in our community. We provide essential, life-saving support to women, and children fleeing abusive situations, addressing the profound physical, emotional, and psychological scars left by domestic violence. Based at the Gateway on Sankey Street in Warrington, we also provide support in the community to a more diverse demographic, including male survivors, disabled people and marginalised groups.
At the heart of our work is a safe refuge offering temporary accommodation for up to 13 women and 18 children, alongside outreach services including crisis intervention, advocacy, counselling, and practical advice on housing, benefits, and legal rights. We recognise that domestic abuse disproportionately impacts those with vulnerabilities, particularly individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges. Survivors with physical or learning disabilities often face heightened barriers to escape and recovery, compounded by isolation, inaccessible services, and trauma-induced mental health conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
Our holistic approach integrates trauma-informed mental health support—through one-on-one counselling, group therapy sessions, and partnerships with local NHS mental health teams—to foster resilience and long-term wellbeing.
