Refuge Frequently Asked Questions

Starting a journey toward safety is an incredibly brave step. Moving into a refuge can feel overwhelming, so providing clear, compassionate information is key to helping residents settle in.

General Refuge Life

What does the accommodation look like?

Our refuge consists of two houses with a total of 13 rooms. Five of these are en-suite, while others share clean bathroom facilities. You will have your own private bedroom, but you will share communal areas like the kitchens, lounges, and laundry rooms with other women and children.

Can I bring my own food?

Yes. Each house has shared kitchen facilities. You will be allocated your own cupboard and fridge/freezer space to store your groceries and cook your own meals.

Is there a curfew?

For your safety and the security of all residents, we do have a "return-by" time in the evening. However, we understand that work or personal appointments may vary, so please speak with your support worker if you need flexibility. We do ask you let us know if you are staying away for a night or longer and request that you sign a booking our form, this is for fire safety regulations.

Disability & Accessibility

Is the refuge accessible for people with physical disabilities?

Yes. We have one specifically designed, disabled-friendly room located on the ground floor. This room and the associated communal areas are designed to accommodate mobility aids. Please let us know your specific requirements during your assessment.

What support is available if I have a sensory impairment or chronic illness?

Our staff are trained to provide personalised support. We can help you navigate the building, arrange for medical appointments, and ensure that any information we provide is in a format that works for you (e.g., large print or audio).

Mental Health & Emotional Support

I’m struggling with my mental health; will I be judged?

Absolutely not. Many women escaping abuse experience trauma, anxiety, depression, or PTSD. We offer a non-judgmental environment and can help you access specialised, free counselling, GP services, or local mental health teams.

Is there someone to talk to at night?

While our main office operates during business hours, we provide an on-call emergency number for out-of-hours support. There is always a way to reach help if you are feeling overwhelmed or unsafe.

Addiction & Recovery

Can I stay here if I have issues with drugs or alcohol?

We support women with a variety of needs, including those in recovery. Our primary requirement is that the refuge remains a safe, substance-free environment for all residents. We will work with you and local recovery services to help you maintain your sobriety and safety.

What happens if I relapse?

We prioritise honesty and safety. If you are struggling, please speak to your support worker. Our goal is to support your recovery journey, though we must ensure that the behaviour does not risk the safety or well-being of other residents.

Safety & Privacy

Can my friends or family visit me?

To keep the location of the refuge confidential and ensure the safety of all 13 residents, no visitors are allowed on the premises. We can help you find safe, neutral places in the community to meet with your loved ones.

How is my privacy protected in shared spaces?

All residents sign a confidentiality agreement promising not to share the address or the identities of anyone living here. While kitchens and lounges are shared, your bedroom is your private sanctuary where staff will only enter in emergencies or for pre-arranged health and safety checks.
